Introduction
To create a 1-year or 3-year Azure App Service reservation, you will use the Azure portal to buy a reserved instance for a Premium v3 or Isolated v2 App Service plan. A reservation locks in a discounted rate for a fixed term, which is applied automatically to any matching App Service plans in the specified scope. So let’s get started step by step to accomplish this task.
Prerequisites
- You must have an Owner or Reservation Purchaser role on an Azure subscription.
- For Enterprise Agreement (EA) subscriptions, the “Reserved Instances” option must be enabled. You can check this in the Policies menu of your EA portal.
Step1 – Navigate to the Reservation Page
- Sign in to the Azure portal.
- In the search bar at the top, type Reservations and select Reservations from the results.
Step 2 – Begin a new purchase
- On the Reservations page, click + Add to purchase a new reservation.
- The Purchase reservations pane will appear. Select the type of product you want to reserve. In this case, you will choose App Service.
Step 3 – Configure the reservation
- Product: Select the appropriate App Service product for your needs. Currently, only Premium v3 and Isolated v2 tiers are eligible for reservations.
- Term: Choose 3 Years for the longest and highest discount. You can also select a 1-year term.
- Scope: Define where the reservation discount will be applied:
- Shared: The discount applies to any matching resources across all subscriptions in your billing context (all subscriptions in your enrollment for EA customers). This is generally the most flexible option and is recommended for most organizations.
- Single subscription: The discount is applied only to resources within a specific, selected subscription.
- Single resource group: The discount is limited to resources in a specific resource group within a selected subscription.
- Region: Select the Azure region where your App Service plans are, or will be, deployed. Reservations are region-specific.
- SKU: Choose the specific SKU for your App Service plan (e.g., P1v3, P2v3, etc.).
- Quantity: Enter the number of instances you want to reserve. Azure Advisor may provide recommendations based on your usage history to help you determine the right quantity.
Step 4 – Review and purchase
- The reservation benefit will apply automatically to any existing or new App Service plans that match the attributes you selected.
- The discount is “use-it-or-lose-it.” If you do not have enough matching resources to use your reserved instances for a given hour, you will lose the discount for that unused quantity.
